Synopsis:
Taiwan is holding its next presidential election on 22nd March. Voters in Taiwan will decide between Frank Hsieh, a political veteran who represents the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, and Ma Ying-jeou, a popular former mayor of Taipei who is fighting to win back the presidency for the Kuomintang. In addition, a referendum on Taiwan’s (bid for) United Nations’ membership will be hold concurrently with the presidential election. The election is highly contended, and the result of the election and the referendum will have significant domestic and international implication.
A panel of experts, including scholars of international relations, Chinese history, and cross-(Taiwan) strait relations, will share first-hand observation from their recent trips to Taiwan at this public forum and provide insightful analysis of Taiwan's election and the future of cross-(Taiwan) strait relations.
